“Dismiss The Immediate as guitar-pop noiseniks at your peril,” wrote John Walshe in Ireland’s pillaring music magazine Hot Press. “More eclectic than even an above average radio-show,” he continued, “the Dublin quartet have a veritable orchestra’s worth of talent at their disposal.” And that really sums The Immediate’s instrument swapping, genre hopping and un-set-aside-able music making very well, thank you Mr. Walshe.
And with this feast of talents, The Immediate have sprung one of the surprises of the year with their extremely impressive debut album, ‘In Towers & Clouds’. For anyone that has witnessed a live show where the band exchange instruments as readily as they do influences and reference points, an album of cohesion must have seemed a far fetched fantasy. Yet ‘In Towers & Clouds’ is one of relentless ambition and self belief which screams ‘yeah we can sound like Pink Floyd, Shack and The Secret Machines, and you better believe it’s going to work.”
As guitarist/drummer/singer David Hedderman and guitarist/drummer/singer Conor O’Brien tell us in Crossthepond 13, they haven’t a clue who Shack and The Secret Machines are. Their musical education came courtesy of a school caretaker at the Embassy penned in grounds of St Conleths College, Dublin. It was here that Conor, Dave and guitarist/drummer/singer Peter Toomey put down their Kerrang magazines, in favour of the works of Love, Can and Serge Gainsbourg.
Later Barra Heavy, who surprise, surprise can play an instrument or five, completed the line up. Their first break came during a disconcerting trip to London, courtesy of the holy grail of first single releases, Fierce Panda Records. Another not-so-shabby indie label, Fantastic Plastic, picked things up from there and followed up a couple more singles with the aforementioned blistering debut album. If you get yourself a copy, just give it time. Trust us, it’s more than worth the patience.
Sounds a bit like: Well throw The Secret Machines, Shack and Pink Floyd in a blender and you might just get The Immediate, or more probably three shredded records.
