The Victorian English Gentlemans Club seem troublesome from the outset. Firstly, it’s a very long name and one that even after just a quiet half a shandy can leave you floundering in inelegant disarray. More importantly though, their wilful disregard for the beautifully complex constructions of the great English language would have Lynne Truss squirming in her grammar constricting breaches. 'What? No apostrophe?' you hear her cry! Well, sorry Lynne, these guys couldn’t give an artic monkey’s (yes I know, and I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist). Once you get over the grammar issue, you’ll realise that it’s indicative of their agenda.
Adam Taylor (guitar and vocals), Louise Mason (bass and vocals) and Emma Daman (drums and vocals) are part of a seemingly burgeoning artistic ex-pat colony in the heart of Wales’ principal city. All three met at art school in Cardiff and have grown into an entity that Ronseal would be proud of - art-rockers they’ve been dubbed, and art rockers they are.
Having abandoned a tortured future pioneering an English Victorian renaissance in painting (that’s according to his tutor), Adam pulled on his guitar and together; he, Louise and Emma yelped all who would listen into submission.
The eponymous (that means self titled, as I'm sure you're all aware (I wasn't once)) debut album was released on Fantastic Plastic and combines disconsolate fragments of spiky punch-you-in-the-guts-smack-you-round-the-chops life affirming not-quite-nihilism into a cherry pie of a whole.
The Tales of Hermit Mark / My Son Spells Backwards and the remarkably raucous Amateur Man / Ban The Gin sowed the seeds of a fledgling cult following, growing ever straighter and taller with the release of Impossible Sightings Over Shelton and the 11-track album. It looks set to sprout new shoots and head skywards. Make sure to get a good seat for the accession of something special.
